At the opening of the film white block printing letters are used on a black background giving the audience expectations of a bold, dark, cold and sombre film. The camera slowly zooms into the text creating tension before a cut to the next opening credit. At this point a echoing solo voice is singing (no words just holding notes) this is un-settling for the audience, other noise's are used in these scenes e.g. chains this contributes to the disturbing atmosphere. A quote fades on,
"The darkest souls are not those which choose to exist within hell of the abyss, but those which choose to break free from the abyss and move silently amoung us - Dr. Samuel Loomis"
this forshadows the following film giving the audience a taste of the ominous extract, hooking them. The previous music is juxaposed by an up-beat novelty pop song, 'Monster Mash' this is ironic as it is commonly associated with Halloween ('Halloween' being the the title of the film), this new song is contrapuntal to the action. Natural light is used when showing the establishing long shot of the house. However, the inside of the house is not lit making it appear dark and mysterous, a a pumpkin is used on the porch as a prop to represent the fact it is halloween. A mesh gate is in the foreground giving the house a stereotypical 'trailer trash' feel furthermore the use of a long shot and long take allows the audience to view all the location, this convey's alot about the life of the subject/sunjects living there. The diegetic sound of a large dog barking conrtibutes to the rough
neighbourhood vibe. Excessive use of the colour yellow and no grass makes the house appear barren. A cut to the point of view shot of a clown mask contrasts with the previous colours this is unexpected for the audienc, the mask is broadly grinning giving an eerie sense. In this scene the non-diegetic pop song becomes diegetic radio music. The masked child reaches towards the camera once again creating tension. A cut to a close up of a rat is then used, rats have conitations of being evil/scary and the use of a close up signifies its importance. At this point a low unsettling tone that is non-digetic starts, this suggests a foreboding future. In this extract of the film opening of 'Halloween', most the conventions used are stereotypical of a horror, with the exception of the up-beat song. This song really helps create a twisted feel making the audience feel on edge, watching the opening of this film highlights the importance of sound.
